چکیده
Galaxy structures represent one of the most challenging observations in cosmology. Whether or not these structures are found to be compatible with the standard model of galaxy formation crucially depends on the a-priori and assumptions encoded in the statistical methods employed to characterize the data and on the a-posteriori hypotheses made to interpret the results. We present strategies to test the most common assumptions, i.e. spatial homogeneity and statistical homogeneity and isotropy. These tests provide evidences that, in the available samples, galaxy distribution is spatially inhomogeneous but statistically homogeneous and isotropic. Different conclusions are obtained through statistical tools based on a-priori assumptions that not verified in the data when directly tested. Thus we find that the observed galaxy structures are not compatible with the standard model of galaxy formation, e.g. LCDM, that predicts spatial homogeneity at small scales (i.e., r < 10 Mpc/h), structures of relatively limited size (i.e. r < 100 Mpc/h) and anti-correlations at large scales (i.e. r > 150 Mpc/h). While the observed inhomogeneities pose a fundamental challenge to the standard picture of cosmology they also represent an important opportunity which may open new directions for many cosmological puzzles. We describe the universe as a local, inhomogeneous spherical bubble embedded in a flat matter dominated FLRW universe. Generalized exact Friedmann equations describe the expansion of the universe and an early universe inflationary de Sitter solution is obtained. A non-perturbative expression for the deceleration parameter q is derived that can possibly describe the acceleration of the universe ...

The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) consists of photons that were last created about 2 months after the Big Bang, and last scattered about 380,000 years after the Big Bang. The spectrum of the CMB is very close to a blackbody at 2.725 K, and upper limits on any deviations from of the CMB from a blackbody place strong constraints on energy transfer between the CMB and matter at all redshifts l...

The existence of future horizons in spacetime geometries poses serious problems for string theory and quantum field theories. The observation that the expansion of the universe is accelerating has recently been shown to lead to a crisis for the mathematical formalism of string and M-theories, since the existence of a future horizon for an eternally accelerating universe does not allow the formu...

In the context of string theory we argue that higher dimensional Dp-branes unwind and evaporate so that we are left with D3-branes embedded in a (9+1)-dimensional bulk. One of these D3-branes plays the rôle of our Universe. Within this picture, the evaporation of the higher dimensional Dp-branes provides the entropy of our Universe.
